SSA Fall Conference

SSA will Honor Associations for Legislative EffortsAt the SSA Fall Conference & Trade Show in Las Vegas this September the Association will recognize the California and Michigan Self Storage Associations, as well as Lisa Chiappetta of the Wisconsin SSA for 2009 and 2010 legislative initiatives. The California SSA has worked to improve the state's lien law. Although the improvements have yet to become law, many milestones have been achieved through the very difficult legislature in Sacramento. Should it become law, the new provision would make it more difficult for late-paying tenants or tenants who have abandoned units to stop the lien process. In cases where a "declaration to opposition" is signed, operators would be able to execute the lien through small claims court, which is less costly than the current municipal court process. Both Michigan and Wisconsin improved the notification standards during the lien processes in their states, resulting in significant savings to self storage businesses. The ceremony will take place during the SSA General Session September 1st at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
